Rotala 'Mini Pearl' is a lesser-known, compact aquatic plant variety popular among aquascapers. It is part of the Rotala genus, which includes several species often used in planted tanks due to their vibrant colors and adaptability.
Characteristics of Rotala 'Mini Pearl':
- Size: It is a small, delicate plant, often used for foreground or midground planting in aquariums. It typically grows to around 2-3 inches in height, making it ideal for nano aquariums or for creating detailed aquascapes.
- Leaves: The leaves are small, round to slightly elongated, and densely packed along the stem. In high light and optimal conditions, the leaves can develop a pinkish or reddish hue.
- Growth Habit: It has a creeping growth pattern, similar to other low-growing species like Hemianthus callitrichoides. With regular trimming, it can form a compact, carpet-like effect on the substrate.
Care Requirements:
- Lighting: Rotala 'Mini Pearl' requires medium to high light for optimal growth and to bring out its reddish coloration. Under low light, the plant may become leggy and lose its vibrant color.
- CO2: While it can grow without CO2 supplementation, providing additional CO2 will greatly improve its growth rate and overall health, especially in high-tech tanks.
- Nutrients: It thrives in nutrient-rich environments, so regular dosing of liquid fertilizers containing macro and micronutrients (like iron) is recommended.
- Water Parameters: It prefers soft to moderately hard water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). The temperature range for this plant is typical of most tropical tanks, between 72-82°F (22-28°C).
Usage in Aquascaping:
- Foreground Plant: Due to its small size and creeping nature, it works well as a foreground plant or for creating intricate details in smaller aquariums.
- Carpeting Effect: With regular pruning and good lighting, Rotala 'Mini Pearl' can form a beautiful, dense carpet.
- Color Accent: Its pinkish-red coloration contrasts well with green plants, making it a great choice for adding color and texture to aquascapes.
Propagation:
- Stem Cuttings: Rotala 'Mini Pearl' can be propagated through stem cuttings. Simply trim healthy stems and replant them into the substrate. The plant will root and continue growing.
